It was a really good book and I enjoyed every minute of it! Highly recommend it, especially if you love reading historical romance or western romance! Historical romance was one of the first genres that I ever fell in love with and it was refreshing to see a new part of history that I had never read before. I couldn't even imagine having to choose over the person you love and the life you've always wanted for yourself.Īlthough I've been reading romance for over 20 years this is the first historical romance that I have ever read that has African American main characters. Rhine must choose whether to keep "passing" and help his community however he can as a wealthy, white man or tell everyone the truth and face prejudice so that he can show his true feelings for Eddy. They both have so much courage that you can't help but admire them. Rhine on the other hand was born a slave with skin light enough to "pass" as white, so when the war ends he heads off West in an effort to shed his old life and build a better future for himself and his people. She's hard working and determined and I absolutely loved her spirit. Eddy was born free and it is her wonderful spirit that causes her to set out west for California and a better life, her dream to own her own restaurant a fire in her soul.
